While not all of us have ever attended summer camp, most of us got to spend our childhood summers playing with our families – some going on camping trips, others just hanging out at home playing hide and seek, or having a BBQ in the backyard.
Children who have suffered from abuse and neglect may never have had that connection with their families. Summer camp can help to fill that void, and give them the experience of a lifetime. It may be a day camp or a week at a residential camp – either way, for some children it's the biggest thrill of their young life.
Summer camp is also an opportunity for some children to learn to swim or canoe, or it may be a specialized camp where they can learn music, science or basketball. No matter what kind of camp, for many it's the first time they can just relax and have fun.
Over the years, the Durham CAS Children's Fund and now the Foundation has provided incredible summer memories for thousands of children. Each year over 600 children attend some form of camp because of the support of donors like you.
